Landscape Design Concept

The presented conceptual framework envisions a connection from Lohseplatz (the former station forecourt) to the authentic relics of the former Platform 2 and the railway course within the historical preservation area, which both lie outside of the planned Lohse Park.

Landscape Design Concept

“The master plan integrates the still visible station square Lohseplatz into the Lohse Park so it may give historical testimony to that bygone era.” (Master plan HafenCity Hamburg, 2000, page 43)

The participants wish to develop an appropriate monument as a memorial and reminder, and create a site that encourages artistic debate. Similarly, connections are to be established with other sites significant for the history of deportations in the HafenCity area and the city center. The presented conceptual framework envisions a connection from Lohseplatz (the former station forecourt) to the authentic relics of the former Platform 2 and the railway course within the historical preservation area, which both lie outside of the planned Lohse Park. The memorial site conceptual plan would see a landscape-designed connector running diagonally through the Lohse Park premises between the two sites lying some 400 meters apart. This would make the historical path of the deportation trains visually apparent in the form of a sightline. In addition a building is being constructed at Lohseplatz that includes a documentation center with a permanent exhibition aimed at historically reclaiming the deportations in Hamburg.
