Workshop Discussion 2008

The Senator for Culture, Sports and Media, Prof. Dr. Karin v. Welck, convened a steering committee at the beginning of 2008 to develop a memorial site commemorating the deportations from the former Hannoverscher Bahnhof, consisting of representatives from the Department of Culture, Sports and Media, the Department of Urban Development and the Environment, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, and external experts.

The results of the conceptual development of a memorial site at Lohseplatz were publicly presented at Kesselhaus on 27 October 2008 and discussed with members of associations and the public.

Senator von Welck: “Especially in HafenCity, where Hamburg’s future is now emerging most prominently, the dark sides of Hamburg’s history should be consciously integrated. The Senate and our entire city need to accept this historical responsibility. The memorial at the former Hannoverscher Bahnhof should reestablish in our consciousness the concrete site from which at least 7692 people were sent to their deaths. The proposed memorial site should permanently document with startling clarity the deep cut in our city’s history left by the National Socialist persecutions and deportations.”
